Therapy - FAQ

Chiropractic - From the American Chiropractic Association

As evidence supporting the effectiveness of chiropractic continues to emerge, health care consumers are turning in record numbers to chiropractic care — a form of health care aimed primarily at enhancing a patient's overall health and well-being without the use of drugs or surgery. More than 30 million people visited doctors of chiropractic last year for a variety of conditions, and more and more medical doctors are referring their patients to doctors of chiropractic.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a system of therapy that utilizes natural therapies such as light, heat, air, water and massage. Naturopathy differs from allopathy by focusing on building health rather than on treating disease. The methods used by a naturopath are non-invasive and may include foods, herbs, fasting, nutritional supplements, bodywork, hydrotherapy, forms of exercise or body movement and/or meditation.

Naprapathy

Naprapathy (Czech náprava, correction - from napravit, to correct) - is a branch of medicine, (manual medicine) that focuses on the evaluation and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Doctors of Naprapathy are connective tissue specialists.  Naprapaths also work like naturopaths and use foods, herbs, fasting, nutritional supplements, bodywork, hydrotherapy, forms of exercise or body movement and/or meditation.

Medical Massage Therapy

Medical massage therapy is one of the oldest forms of massage therapy in existence because during the early history of massage most people received massage therapy for the treatment of musculo-skeletal aches and pains.  Medical massage is clinical massage therapy that is performed by a national board certified member of the American Medical Massage Association.  Medical massage is frequently prescribed by a medical physician for a patients specific health care problem.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Acupuncture (from Lat. acus, "needle" (noun), and pungere, "prick" is a technique of inserting and manipulating very thin needles into "acupuncture points" on the body with the aim of restoring health and well-being, e.g. treating pain and diseases. Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China and is most commonly associated with Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).  The acupuncture practiced at CHM is medical acupuncture which is a form of modern evidence based acupuncture.

The Michigan Public Health Code requires that acupuncture is practiced by a licensed medical physician and/or a certified acupuncture specialist working under medical referral and medical supervision.

Holistic Health Care

Holistic health refers to a philosophy of patient care that views physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important approaches to treatment. While frequently associated with alternative medicine, it is also increasingly used in mainstream medical practice as part of a broad view of patient care.
